Mesa Verde, Spanish for ‘Green Table’, was a flourishing community from AD 600 through AD 1300. These cliff dwellings actually represent the last 75 to 100 years of occupation.

Looking down from top level of Step House gives the above view. Note the flat top pyramid looking building in the distance. That is called a pit house and is what was lived in in the AD 600 period. It was believed to house about 25 people. In the foreground you can see the large kiva used for this community.
