      sprague lake picnic
Sprague Lake is a scenic trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. Named after Abner Sprague who started a homestead in 1874 then later opened a lodge for dude ranching, hunting and fishing. The area became part of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, continuing to serve guest as the Sprague Hotel. The hotel no longer exists but it stood just across the bridge in the picture above and to the left.

I had parked, crossed the bridge and just as I was ready to start the hike around Sprague Lake, I turned, seeing such a wonderful image. I have to imagine much of this is like it was in the days of Abner Sprague.
