On the east side of main street in downtown Winter Park, behind the
many condos that are there now, is a native wetlands area. While standing on the third floor landing of the condo we were staying in, I
spotted a moose in the wetlands. I quickly grabbed my camera and telephoto lens and tried to get some shots of it.(above)
Then thinking I could get closer, I changed lenses and went down to get a better shot. As I approached, as stealthily as I could,
I forgot these were called wetlands for a reason. When I let out a yell having stepped right into a cold water stream, the moose looked up and
took off. Guess I will not become a tracker.
In winter, moose remain in their territory, often in marshes and wetlands and form 'yards' - they create
paths in the deep snow as they paw for food. Moose are very large, very fast animals and are aggressive when disturbed. It is
probably good for me that he ran away instead of toward me!
