Early Morning at Lake Dillon
the rockies
    lake dillon
Traveling along Swan Mountain road from Keystone, on our way to Breckenridge on an early spring morning we saw this panorama accentuated by the large rock and accompanying tree. The lighting, the foreground with the old fence, a part of Lake Dillon in the distance and the backdrop of Buffalo Mountain were too much to resist.

Dillon Reservoir was originally a naturally formed lake that remained unnoticed until the mid 1800s, when gold was discovered in the area. Upon this discovery, the trade post town of Dillon was formed on the bank of the Blue River and was the most populous area in Summit County. As ski resorts popped up in the mid 1900s, tourism outweighed mining and the economy shifted forever. The lake became a target for expansion by the city of Denver, who deemed it necessary to have a water reserve in the high country.
