      house of many windows
Mesa Verde, Spanish for ‘Green Table’, was a flourishing community from AD 600 through AD 1300. These cliff dwellings actually represent the last 75 to 100 years of occupation. My first stop after visiting the Far Way Visitor station was to look across Cliff Canyon.

This home is on a 10 ft wide ledge and like all homes in the cliff dwellings, what looks like windows are actually the doors that were likely covered with animal hides. This was an eleven-room house and actually, out of view to the right was an upper alcove. From there, there were toe-holds in the rock leading to the upper plateau.
