      echo lake
Echo Lake sits at the base (10,600 ft) of the Mt. Evans Scenic Byway - the highest paved road in North America. The road increases an impressive 7,000 ft in 28 miles to the summit of Mt. Evans - 14,264 ft. This image was taken from the Echo Lake Lodge which sits at the entrance to the Scenic Byway.

Echo Lake is a shallow, oligotrophic lake formed during the lastest period of glaciation - roughly 10,000 years ago. The ecosystem around the lake is dominated by Engleman Spruce and Sup-Alpine Fir with some Limber Pine on exposed sites. There is a park here providing a stone shelter with picnic tables and barbecue grills on one end of the lake and a campground on the other.
