Cottonwood Pass Aspens
destinations - winter park
      cottonwood pass aspens
Heading north on Hwy 40 out of Winter Park, thru Fraser and Tabernash, turn on CO Hwy 55 - just a few miles before reaching Granby. You will find yourself on a well-packed gravel road almost immediately. This road is the actual stagecoach route used in the late 1800's over Cottonwood Pass to Hot Sulphur Springs. You find yourself traveling back in time as you wind your way along rolling farmland and up the gradual grade to the pass.

As you near the top of Cottonwood Pass your eyes are drawn to a grove of aspen trees - seemingly an island of white against the dark backdrop of the evergreens. Aspens are unique in that they typically grow in large clonal colunies derived from a single seedling, and spreading by means of root suckers.
