Castle Peak is the highest peak in the Elks Mountain Range at 14, 279 ft. it is 15 miles
south of Aspen with an easy drive to approximately treeline. One characteristics of the Elks is loose rock so be prepared. Good hiking shoes are a must.
This image was taken from the summit, taking in the trail down as well as the mountain ranges to the south. I had come up the
other side and had to traverse a rather large snow field with a steep, tricky climb back onto the trail - of loose rock. The hike
to the summit was not difficult, but you must keep you eyes on your footing and not get caught trying to take in scenery and walk at the
same time. Too dangerous to do that on this mountain.
