On a two day, 854 mile road trip over the Memorial Day weekend in 2010, I traveled from Denver to the
western slopes of the Rockies, visited Telluride before settling into Cortez for the night. The Mesa Verde National Park and the world famouns cliff dwellings
awaited me the next morning. However, the trip to Cortez was such a beautiful, scenic drive.
The entire drive from Ridgway to Telluride was wonderful. I only wish I had someone with me to do the driving so I could really enjoy the view instead of getting
glimpses while hoping to keep my jeep on the road. I stopped just outside Telluride, watching and listening to a roaring stream in the foreground (the snow melting
was creating streams that were full and running very fast) and the peaks surrounding Telluride in the distance. Telluride sits at the base of those peaks, almost
like being in a bowl. However, unknown to me, there was a huge mountain film fest going on in Telluride so after driving around the main streets, taking in the
hordes of people and Hollywood film crews everywhere, I gave up staying here and headed for Cortez, CO.
